In 1925 Anton Fridrichsen wrote "Le problème du miracle dans le christianisme primitif," a work which has had far-reaching effects on the study and interpretation of the miracle stories in the New Testament. As a form critic, Fridrichsen believed he could penetrate back of the written gospels to their oral antecedents. What he discovered there was a rich and varied tradition out of which grew his understanding of the background and purpose of the miracle narratives. He wrote this book as he became convinced that miracle was part and parcel of the oldest Christian faith and mission – that any description of the church's early existence apart from attention to miracle was impossible.
