Explains the finishing techniques used to enhance the look and value of wood on objects, whether antique reproductions or simple household items. Each step in this text is illustrated and the procedures covered include filling, bodying, stiffing and spiriting off. Also covered are various varnishing techniques, oil finishes, chemical stains and wax finishes. Special tips are given for handling awkward, hard-to-reach spots such as corners, drawer fronts, legs and other lathe-turned parts. There are variations for unique pieces: polishing over oil; open pore finish; eggshell gloss finish and ebonizing, as well as techniques for correcting defects.

This book demonstrates how to use French polish, varnishes, oil and wax finishes, natural and chemical stains, fumed finishes, and milk paint in an effort to achieve classic finishes. Allen, an expert in the field, provides good directions and helpful color illustrations. Nevertheless, he aims his comments at the experienced wood finisher; his excellent text is appropriate for meeting special needs but is more involved than the average woodworker would expect or need. Recommended for comprehensive collections.
