Grade 4-6. This collection of 60 easy science experiments incorporates some good ideas but suffers from flaws in organization and lapses of language. Although there are brief mentions of environmental responsibility, there is no unifying theme to the experiments?the authors mean the environment in the broadest sense of everything around us. More than half of the entries investigate biology, with the rest split between physics, Earth science, chemistry, and astronomy. "Tamper Check" merely examines seals on product packaging as "consumer safety awareness"?hardly fodder for a meaningful science fair entry. Each activity is clearly outlined with needed supplies and equipment, followed by a couple of questions to consider. No further explanation of the principles involved is given; the emphasis is on observation. The authors ask readers to "hypothesize" without explaining what it means. Appropriate safety precautions are given; however, some directions leave out important equipment and others call for considerable sophistication in knowing how to use it. The general effect is of considerable oversimplification and of potential frustration for readers. Mediocre line drawings accompany each project. Janice VanCleave's 201 Awesome, Magical, Bizarre, & Incredible Experiments (Wiley, 1994), The Franklin Institute of Science Museum's The Ben Franklin Book of Easy and Incredible Experiments (Wiley, 1995), and Carol Amato and Eric Ladizinsky's 50 Nifty Science Fair Projects (Lowell House, 1993) all have superior writing and graphics.?Jonathan Betz-Zall, Sno-Isle Regional Library System, Edmonds, WA
