About the Author
Gilbert C. Fite, a native of South Dakota, is a well-known Western historian. He is a former George Lynn Cross professor of history at the University of Oklahoma, former president of Eastern Illinois University and a former Richard Russell chair in history at the University of Georgia in Athens.
