Grade 5-7?A collection of monster superlatives. In brief, chatty entries, the authors attempt to identify the eeriest, most haunting, strangest, and other ghostly record holders. Although the book resembles the shorter subject-specific editions of the Guinness Book of World Records, it lacks their established authority. Some entries are based on historical fact, but most apparently represent the authors' personal opinions. No objective selection criteria are evident and monster-philes may disagree with some of the rankings. The sketchy black-ink drawings that accompany each article are unpolished but appropriately gruesome. The information can be found elsewhere, but the short text and easy-to-read format will appeal to reluctant readers. While this does not measure up to Daniel Cohen's well-researched collections of "true" horror tales, it could fill a need where there is high demand for browsing material.?Elaine E.
