Synopsis

Two of the world's best-selling authors on woodcarving for the first time have created an introduction to the craft with emphasis on the woodcarver's tools: choosing your basic set, understanding the special capacities of each knife, knowing the rich tradition behind each type of blade and handle, the various ways of keeping them sharp and well maintained, and, of course, instructions on how to get the results you want. Over 150 photos and nearly 300 illustrations fill every chapter with inspirational examples of the woodcarver's art, along with the word-and-picture setups that show you what to do at every step.

Reviews

In the span of seven chapters, three projects, tables, and a glossary, the Bridgewaters have crafted a fine introduction to the art of woodcarving. Woodworkers themselves in addition to being authors of dozens of titles on the subject (e.g., Power Tool Woodcarving, Sterling, 1994), they intend their current volume for beginners. Coverage of the basics of trees, wood, and lumber is accomplished quite well. Gentle and practical explanations of the basic tools, safety, carving, and sharpening techniques in text, line drawings, and photographs engage the reader. Discussions of more advanced tools and techniques are mentioned but not exhaustively covered in the early chapters. The projects are interesting and require precision and attention, but the results are worth the effort. This guide is well suited to the motivated beginner and useful as a reference point to the occasional but experienced carver. Recommended for do-it-yourself and hobby collections.
