This is an irresistible book for anyone who deeply appreciates the art of the masters. Thirty contemporary artists take us from a brief analysis of an artist and his technique through a re-creation of those techniques using modern materials. The point is not exact duplication but absorption of the essential tonal harmonics and methods of the masters. With this lively approach, one will be challenged, but not intimidated, by the works of Botticelli, Titian, Rubens, Rossetti, and Monet. Collections that already contain Ettore Maiotti's excellent The Oil Painting Handbook: Learning from the Masters (Potter, 1990) may want to add this for its coverage of modern masters like Mondrian and Hockney.
