Gr. 4^-8. Illustrated with many full-color photographs of NBA pros in action and young teens playing and performing drills, this attractive guide explains the basics of dribbling, passing, shooting, rebounding, and team play and discusses the varied philosophies of current NBA coaches and teams. The instructional chapters are particularly strong, describing and illustrating each skill and giving appropriate drills for young players. One chapter demonstrates a few set plays with clear diagrams and step-by-step instructions. Although the many references to current NBA players and their teams make the book sound up to date today, the frequency of trades in the league almost ensures that these same references will sound outdated in a year or two. Still, young people who want to improve their games will find plenty of good advice here in an appealing format. Carolyn Phelan
