Grade 5-8. An excellent introduction. Beginning with a basic explanation of how lenses work, the book progresses to an examination of a microscope, including the different types, a physical description of its parts, how to focus, and keeping a journal for projects. Instructions are provided on making a simple wet mount slide, using stains, and creating well slides for observing specimens in liquids. Needed materials are readily available and warnings are provided if substances are potentially hazardous or adult supervision is recommended. Numerous simple experiments are laid out, such as watching yeast grow, observing simple one-cell animals in water, and collecting and studying fingerprints. The attractive, well-designed format features colorful drawings and full-color microscopic photographs that are helpful in illustrating and explaining projects. Similar to Janice VanCleave's Microscopes and Magnifying Lenses (Wiley, 1993), this title is a welcome addition to any science section.?Cynthia M. Sturgis, Ledding Library, Milwaukee, OR
