PreS This quartet of purposeful board books provides minimal vocabulary building for youngsters. The first one features items that will be familiar to babies. The verso displays one large object, and the facing page shows four vaguely related items. For example, "bed" faces a page showing a carriage, a mobile, a brush, and a bib. The second title has the same format, while the version for three-year-olds has four boxes per page with related items appearing across the spread. They are also thematically arranged, such as toys, fruits and vegetables, animals, etc. Finally, four-year-olds are given nine pictures per page to point to and name. Unremarkable illustrations done predominantly in primary colors have black outlines and are age appropriate. Richard Scarry's word books provide more engaging exposure to vocabulary and ideas for preschoolers, but libraries with large board-book collections may want to purchase this serviceable series.
