Reviews

Although stuffed dolls and animals are sometimes called soft sculpture, the term is more likely to refer to decorative items made of stuffed and stitched fabric. This book updates earlier soft sculpture books such as Carolyn Vosburg Hall's Soft Sculpture (LJ 6/1/81) with information on new decorative materials, sewing machines accessories, glue guns, and construction techniques related to soft sculpture. Beginning, intermediate, and advanced projects include flowers, cactuses, and a starfish pillow. The illustrated instructions are particularly good.

Farris' shortcut? The sewing machine, along with a bunch of fancy attachments and accessories. Her dozen projects are definitely worth stitching. Although much of the initial information is without much value, she is meticulous about all the technical details, which helps when readers tackle her patterns (divided by level of difficulty: beginner, intermediate, and advanced). Her designs are whimsical, brilliantly colored, and deserving of a permanent place in the home, from Kermit-like frog families and a never-needs-care cactus to an elegant arrangement of calla lilies and anthuriums and a life-sized palm tree.
