Gr. 4^-6. This book briefly looks at the history of ballet, the life of a professional dancer, and what a beginner needs to know about ballet classes. The main section introduces the basic exercises in a classical ballet class, from the five positions to little jumps and pirouettes. Full-color photographs of children in class show a series of motions for each exercise, while the captions offer explanations and advice. Translated from the French, the text generally works well, though the writing sounds like a translation from time to time. A glossary explains the pronunciation and meaning of French terms used in ballet classes throughout the world. Carolyn Phelan
