Instructions and patterns are facile, but moderate experience is assumed. In addition to detailing how to stitch a varied line of jackets, coats, dresses, skirts, culottes and pants from four basic patterns, Bensussen presents particularly useful sections on such sewing basics as finishing details and pockets. Wardrobe planning tips are included as well. Pen-and-ink drawings are plentiful, adding dimension to the text, but color photographs of finished garments would have better conveyed Bensussen's patterns and wardrobe principles.
