Grade 4-6-- It's hard to imagine anyone learning karate completely from a book, which can show basic stances, punches, blocks, and kicks, but cannot convey the fluidity of the moves when all put together. Thus this book may help students wanting to review classroom techniques, or for complete novices who want to find out about karate. Black-and-white photos show basic warm-up exercises, moves, sparring, self-defense, and form; drawings clarify some of the photos. Still, even many of the simpler moves would be hard to reconstruct from these static, unnumbered photographs. The section on sparring techniques is lengthy, but not too imaginative, and that on self-defense seems a little shortchanged. One technique appears particularly ineffectual, since the shorter defender can barely reach the taller attacker's face. Overall, there's not much new here; purchase only to beef up a scrawny martial arts collection. --Cathryn A. Camper, Minneapolis Public Library
