Reviews

This unassuming little book pulls its own weight, cramming much information into 88 pages. Martin, an Irish patchworker, and Young, a patchwork enthusiast from New Zealand, apply their logical approach in quilting to presenting the tricks of the trade in writing: they provide a bit of quilt history; a guide to tools, construction and care of quilts; and instruction in executing patchwork designs. While the authors assume a knowledge of sewing and a grasp of the language of dressmaking (e.g., selvedges, basting), no previous knowledge of patchwork is required. And though the basic equipment of patchwork has long remained unchanged, Martin and Young approve of labor-saving devices (e.g., sewing machines). However, readers will need to use their imaginations to refresh perfunctory color combinations.
