Straubing has assembled 26 excerpts from books about World War II published between 1941 and 1979. Almost all of these works are out of print; some are classics and some have been deservedly forgotten. The compiler has divided this work into nine sections, including prelude to war; war on land, sea, and air; POWs; women; and homefront. Each section contains two to four selections. Straubing's objective and point of view is unclear, however. This is a miscellany of some interesting--and some not-so-interesting--war memoirs. With most of the excerpts available through interloan, this is not an essential purchase.
