Reviews

The latest volume in Sterling's "Basics" series and the third in the series by Allen (e.g., Joinery Basics , LJ 7/92), this book introduces elementary and intermediate aspects of wood finishing in comprehensive but concise fashion. The chapters detail the basics of wood composition, finishing tools and supplies, and the pros and cons of each type of finish in the context of a specific project. Special finishes are discussed, as are safety tips and techniques. The volume's profuse illustrations relate closely to the text and expand on it, complementing the simple yet lively writing. As with other volumes in the "Basics" series--specifically those written by Allen--this is a solid introduction to the considerations of woodfinishing. The instruction is less technical than Michael Dresdner's The Woodfinishing Book ( LJ 9/15/92). Recommended for general do-it-yourself collections.
