Grade 6 Up-- The noted Chinese-American watercolor artist chronicles his 80-plus years, concentrating first on his childhood, then on establishing himself as an artist while a young man, and finally skimming over the highlights of his later years. Written in an anecdotal style, Kingman's reminiscences are interesting, but hold little appeal for children. The book's organization, which is not strictly chronological, is often confusing. The illustrations--sketches and watercolor reproductions--are beautiful but, again, their subject matter is more of interest to adults. Libraries with a focus on art and artists may appreciate this title, especially the chapters in which the artist describes his techniques, supplies, and the layout of his studio. Those with Asian-American interest collections might consider it as well. Although its style seems similar to Bill Peet: An Autobiography (Houghton, 1989), which describes different aspects of virtually the same era and an equal devotion to art, Paint the Yellow Tiger lacks Peet's cohesion, ease, and ability to involve young readers, and its place in a general children's collection is therefore questionable. --Carla Kozak, San Francisco Public Library
