Grade 5-8-- An attractive volume for experienced builders that features clear black-and-white line drawings and bold print directions. The text begins with eight pages of short lessons about thrust, lift, drag, the parts of an airplane, and how they affect the flight of each model. Chapters follow with step-by-step directions for several airplanes. Note that these are directions only, not full-size traceable or cut-out designs as found in the popular ``White Wings'' kits and in Mander & Gossage's The Great International Paper Airplane Book (S. & S., 1967; o.p.), although many of the designs approach the complexity found in these classics. The drawings used here show solid and dotted lines for various folds, but do not include directional arrows or explanatory captions, so that it is necessary to refer back and forth between text and illustrations to complete a project. Many of the designs require complex consecutive folds and/or measuring, cutting, and taping. Churchill incorporates helpful hints for launching and flying each model. The book looks emminently appropriate for this age group, but a high level of concentration, effort, and patience is required for success. Barnaby's How to Make and Fly Paper Airplanes (Four Winds, 1968; o.p.) includes 15 different models but also emphasizes the principles of flight and gives background needed to experiment with more sophisticated models. After absorbing one of the books for beginners, readers will be ready to try Fabulous Paper Airplanes.
