It's a great device for a beginner--like having a friend peer over your shoulder, giving you helpful advice every step of the way. The text and how-to illustrations are clear and perfectly complement each other."--Field & Stream. "Fundamental enough for the true beginner."--Int'l Marine Angler. This somewhat updated version of the authors' earlier guide of the same title (Sterling, 1979) adds patterns, a new format, and prose revisions. The information is aimed at beginners and intermediate practitioners. If your public library is one of the few that does not have a basic fly tying title published within the last 25 years, then this is an excellent purchase, but there is no need to buy it if you own a first edition that is in good condition. For serious collections, Helen Shaw's Fly Tying (1967) and Poul Jorgensen's Book of Fly Thing: A Guide for All Game Fish (Johnson Bks., 1989) are the definitive titles.
