Synopsis
From the a Queen of Hearts to Tribal Dancers, these 30 enchanting, surprising paper doll projects will captivate the imagination! They encompass a variety of styles and techniques, pushing the boundaries of what paper dolls are and can be. To create basic "Simply Victorian" greeting card dolls, select favorite reproductions of period angels, flowers, and other art images and cut them out. Then add metallic paint, a skirt fashioned from florist's foil, and glue. Make a festive Santa from papier mâché. Découpage vintage paper doll children onto a frame: the patterns are all here. Get dolled up with a fancy fall figure, molded out of card stock and decorated with silk autumn leaves. Each one is magnificent!

Idaho author (Decorating with Paint and Paper, 1998; Papermaking for the First Time, 2002, etc.) and former art educator Rainey goes far beyond the common household materials of paper, scissors, and glue. Inspired by art from Japanese dolls to turn-of-the-century silhouettes, she mixes media deftly to create more than a two-dimensional paper cutout. Eschewing introductory lessons in materials, tools, and techniques, the author immediately opens with more than two-dozen projects to choose from--some merely decorative, others acting as toys and unusual accessories. Along with occasional design tips (e.g., ideas for pattern variations), each project lists materials, identifies the step-by-step process, and features color photographs as well as templates, when needed. Check out the charming humpty dumple (no, not a typo!), the queen of hearts marionette, and the holiday greeting-card holder. Much more than the childhood game of rock, paper, scissors.
