This effort by the Union of Concerned Scientists follows its Fallacy of Star Wars ( LJ 11/15/84), which criticized the technical aspects of the Strategic Defense Initiative. According to the scientists and defense experts contributing to this volume, the technical problems of SDI remain and the scientific community is balking at resolving them. Command and control for Star Wars may prove unreliable, largely due to its complexity and dependence on software well beyond the current state of the art. Star Wars itself remains undefinedis it population defense or military defense? An alienated Nato and an accelerated arms race are further concerns which should lay Star Wars to rest, but this is not likely during the present administration. Timely and essential. D. Felbel, Univ. of Manitoba Lib., Winnipeg
