Eicher, author of the extremely useful The Civil War in Books: An Analytical Bibliography (Univ. of Illinois, 1996) as well as Robert E. Lee: A Life Portrait (LJ 9/15/97), has written text to accompany hundreds of photographs of Civil War sites from his collection of over 10,000 images. Familiar places are included, such as the Lincoln Memorial and Fort Sumter, but also lesser-known ones like the John Morrow House in Prairie Grove, AR. The text offers a fine, succinct overview of the bloodiest war in our history. Very well written, it is laced with quotations from the journals, letters, and diaries of the participants. Casual readers and Civil War buffs will both enjoy this valuable book, especially those planning a trip to Civil War sites.
