YA Pally Thompson is the heroine of Bobby Rex' greatest hita hit song about a supposed love affair between Pally and Bobby Rex. This song shakes up the small town of Orfax, N.C., and upsets Pally's relationships with her friends and her fiance. As she ponders why Bobby Rex wrote a song about her, Pally relates memories of her high-school days. Her exploits with her wild girlfriend Shilda, her dates with staid Bynum Jenkins, and her loving relationship with her mother are recounted with matter-of-fact humor and sadness. The novel ends three years after the song has been released. Pally is still dealing with the repercussions from ``her song,'' but she has come to terms with her adolescent dreams and reality. Characters are created lovingly, and events are in turn hilarious or tragic. The town of Orfax in the late 1950s is so real that one can almost feel the humidity, and the patterns of speech and dialect are realistic and poetic. Adolescents will relate to Pally's feelings, traumas, and hopes. Lois Jerolleman, Houston Public Library

It's 1961 in Orfax, N.C., and Bobby Rex Mosely has just had a hit record with his song "Pally Thompson"all about making love down by the river. Except Pally never even kissed Bobby Rexthough they were down by the river together once, and Pally did have her clothes off. But now that Bobby Rex has gone and written that song the whole town thinks "that other thing" happened. First novelist Gingher's little slice of American teenage life in the late 50s is a rich and evocative portrait of an era many baby boomers now turning 40 remember fondly. Her characters are full and well drawn and she has captured the patois of Southern teenage speech. There is mystery, humor, and a certain magic about this story. There is little to offend here, too, so older YAs might enjoy what Mom and Dad were like way back when. Recommended. Rosellen Brewer, Monterey Cty . , Lib., Seaside, Cal.
