The poems in Taylor's vivid new collection are about a place and some people who have lived there for generations: Taylor's own family, Quaker farmers in Loudoun County, Virginia, since the late eighteenth century, and their neighbors. In a few pages of loose blank verse, Taylor does what his fellow writer of place, Wendell Berry, often takes a short story to accomplish, fully realizing a character through imagery and carefully chosen incident. Here, as virtually as literature could present anyone, are Taylor's grandfather, whose heart was as true as his eye (even in old age, he could catch without breaking a long-tossed egg barehanded); a feckless day-laborer neighbor; and another neighbor's daughter's artist husband--Arshile Gorky. At the center of the book, done up in quatrains, is Carrie Taylor's letter to a sister about General Sheridan's blazing 1864 passage through the county. Buffering the long narratives are meditative lyrics inspired by a recent walk along the creek that waters the Taylor lands; they are melancholy, for the poet no longer lives there. Ray Olson
