In joyful rhymes that flow energetically across the pages, the book describes positive character traits like nurturing, courage, and generosity, while leaving plenty of room for more physical achievements such as playing sports: "Boy, you're amazing, the things you can do!/Cut out a birthday card, write `I love you,'/build a snow fort and tell time on the clock,/ride your big bike all the way down the block." Yoshikawa's mixed-media illustrations feature bold backgrounds and vibrant, colorful scenes that often play with perspective. Unexpected bits of newsprint are scattered throughout. With their simple round faces, the cartoonlike characters are diverse, expressive, and appealing. The book concludes with a page of boys' names and visages and offers up the sentiment, "think of the things you will grow up to do!- Boy, you're amazing!/I'm glad that/you're YOU!"-Shelley B.
