Reviews

PreSchool-K–To keep track of her 12 ducklings, Mama Duck groups them and regroups them–in twos, then threes, then fours, and finally in two lines of six. A hungry wolf with poor eyesight smells them marching through the weeds and decides to attack. Hearing One, two, he thinks that it will be easy for him to capture his lunch. Hes in for a surprise when he learns that Mama Duck has her offspring in two groups, and that 12 ducklings can pack a punch. Each little bird has an individual hairstyle and a personality to go with it, making the bold color illustrations fun to follow while looking for the wolf. Kids will enjoy this read-aloud that introduces math concepts. The text falls short as some rhymes work (back/track) while others do not (out/count), but dont let that stop anyone from enjoying the educational value of this book and its funny little quackers.–Sandra Welzenbach, Villarreal Elementary School, San Antonio, TX

In the style of Stuart Murphy's MathStart series, this lively picture book, originally published in Korea, is both an entertaining story and a playful way to teach simple arithmetic. Mama Duck tries various ways to keep track of her dozen ducklings. First she sorts them by twos, so she only needs to count to six. Then she makes it easier by grouping the ducklings into threes. When that proves to be too much counting, she lines them up in groups of four, and then six. When an old wolf attacks, Mama and ducklings overwhelm him with their sheer numbers.^B The double-page spreads show multiplication and division in spacious scenarios with brightly colored characters that splash, scowl, and have fun in small groups--and finally all together as they defeat their enemy.
