When Marcus walks to the barbershop, he sees a lot of bad news--buildings covered in graffiti and people drinking outside a liquor store. But at the shop, one by one, the people tell him all about the good news that's in their neighborhood.

Cole is an Albert Whitman author.
Gr 1-4-When Marcus travels to the barbershop alone for the first time, he is frightened by the sights and sounds around him. He worries about "bad stuff" that happened in an alley late one night and about people drinking from brown paper bags by a liquor store. The once-familiar area seems dark and threatening. At the barbershop, people notice his sad face and remind him of the "good news" that happens in their inner-city neighborhood. Mr. Alexander and his son refurbish old bicycles for kids who don't have them. Other neighbors like Ms. Isabelle, who has a beautiful garden, and Kyle, who loves to play the trumpet, transform the neighborhood back into a friendly place. On his way home, Marcus sees the "good news" again and decides that he is going to contribute to it. In the first half of the book, stark black-and-white photographs emphasize the seedy, uncomfortable scenes the African-American child passes on his journey. Close-up shots, like one of a mouth yelling and another of the side of a police car, convey the child's-eye view. On the trip home, photographs are tinted with color, reflecting Marcus's changed perceptions. He sees a golden trumpet; a bouquet of black-eyed Susans; and a red, white, and blue ice pop. The caring adults help Marcus achieve a balanced impression of his city streets. Through them, he gains a more rounded view of where he lives and who he wants to be.
