Hi, Diane Paterson here. Been writing and illustrating for a gazillion years and still having fun. Now venturing into the wiggly world of animation. A new approach... sneaking up on words and characters as they squiggle across the stage. Like playing hide and seek with an impish child giggling and shouting with joy at discovery. So, animation for me right now is another way to snag those fleeting ideas and inspirations and trap them on the page. First animation then paper pages. We'll see. Stay tuned!
Marisa's birthday was drawing near, and today her mother took her to buy a piņata. At the store, Marisa saw a beautiful butterfly piņata and knew she had to have it. When it was time for the party, Marisa didn't know if she could hit it.
Ages 4-7. In preparation for her birthday party, five-year-old Marisa picks out a colorful, butterfly pinata and insists on placing it on her dresser, instead of storing it in the closet. The more she plays with the pinata, the more attached to it she becomes.. On the day of her party, she can't bear to hit the beautiful pinata. Fortunately, her understanding. creative parents solve the problem and all ends well, with candy streaming from a homemade pinata, and the butterfly safe in Marisa's arms. Told in English and Spanish, the story is well paced and satisfying. Spanish words placed in the English narrative are easily understood in context. The watercolor pictures convey Marisa's attachment to the butterfly and her emotional turmoil in the midst of a lively party. Birthday stories are always popular; this new one adds a Latin flavor and an unusual twist. Linda Perkins
