Frustrated by his lack of height and his inability to reach his crayons on top of the refrigerator, Spence discovers that being small has its advantages when his mother loses an earring under the couch

PreSchool-Grade 2 Chevalier's familiar character Spence discovers that it's okay to be small. The story is slight and a bit predictable, as small Spence struggles in vain to reach his box of crayons on top of the refrigerator by jumping, stretching, donning his mother's high heels, climbing on a chair, and finally swinging at them with a broom handle. Mother, who is tall, of course has no trouble reaching the crayons, but she drops one of her earrings in the process. It is small Spence's turn to be helpful, as he crawls under the couch to retrieve it. The vocabulary is easy and repetitive and filled with action verbs: good for beginning readers to try on their own or for a preschool read- aloud book. Illustrations are drawn in brown ink with orange washes of color, and are in Chevalier's familiar spare comic style. While not the most visually appealing book, this is an acceptable choice as an easy reader or read - aloud because it is simple, humorous, action-oriented, and deals with a real frustration of childhood.
