When Ms. Sun, a teacher at Sky School, announces that each student will have a turn being “Star of the Week,” Twinkle plans to sing her favorite song. Each week brings something different, from Blaze’s “Asteroid cookies” to Beamer’s pet comet to Luster’s favorite book. Then Blink sings “Twinkle, Twinkle,” which upsets Twinkle and sends her searching for something else, besides the song, to share with the class. An unexpected event, though, provides both a happy solution and a rewarding revelation. Slick, color-saturated cartoon illustrations depict the animated, star-headed characters against their deep-toned galaxy setting, filled with familiar details—classroom desks, teacher’s briefcase—as well as planetary ones: the star-kids make a Big Dipper shape during “Constellation Tag,” for example. Playful endpapers include some facts, such as “Stars are balls of hot gas held together by gravity.” A sympathetic portrayal of overcoming disappointment and discovering personal talents.
