Synopsis

Morris Graves (1910 - 2001) was an American painter. He was one of the earliest Modern artists from the Pacific Northwest to achieve national and international acclaim. His style, referred to by some reviewers as Mysticism, used the muted tones of the Northwest environment, Asian aesthetics and philosophy, and a personal iconography of birds, flowers, chalices, and other images to explore the nature of consciousness. An article in a 1953 issue of Life magazine cemented Graves' reputation as a major figure of the 'Northwest School' of artists. This book was published in conjunction with the exhibition MORRIS GRAVES: VISION OF THE INNER EYE organized by the Phillips Collection which showed from April 1983 - September 1984 at the Greenview County Museum of Art, in Greenview, South Carolina; at the Whitney Museum of American Art, in New York; at the Oakland Museum, in Oakland, CA; and at the San Diego Museum of Art in San Diego. Graves's aesthetic combines a romantic love of natural forms with symbols (birds, chalices, snakes) that are imbued with religious connotations and executed on delicate paper with the skill of an oriental calligrapher. Duncan Phillips, one of Graves's most enthusiastic admirers and collectors, noted of his art, "One feels a solicitude for the survival of such precious, already crinkled papers..... In no other medium, in no other way could the artist have expressed what he had to say about the brevity and insecurity of life". The essay is written by Ray Kass who drew on extensive interviews with Graves and his associates to create a complete biography of the artist. This book is the most complete documentation of the artist's life and work. A full exhibition history and bibliography are provided. Includes 40 color plates and 130 black and white illustrations that reproduce all of Grave's major paintings with many in print for the first time.
