Recounts the A.N.C.'s efforts to end apartheid, and describes the experiences of its jailed leader, Nelson Mandela

In this book, South African journalist Holland details events leading up to the present impasse in her country, not just the history of the African National Congress. It is a moving account of how peaceful demands by blacks for justice and human rights for over 50 years met with intransigence from whites and resulted in fewer rights with more repression, ultimately leading to open bloodshed. At present both camps are strengthened in their resolve--the blacks by belated international support, the whites by fear of losing their privileged status if democratic majority rule were instituted. It would be quite difficult to choose between this book and Stephen Davis's fine Apartheid's Rebels ( LJ 10/1/87), but Holland's more popular writing style might better suit public libraries, while universities would do well to own both. Highly recommended.

A detailed and readable history of the African National Congress. Holland's clear, journalistic style follows the ANC from its beginning days of peaceful agitation in 1912 through the first public demonstration in 1919 and the defiance during the 1950s to its status today. Special attention is given to the struggles of leaders such as Nelson Mandela, Oliver Tambo, Anton Lembede, and Walter Sisulu. Comparisons of changes in the white government as well as the ANC highlight policy changes and the passage of repressive laws. Holland uses personal interviews as well as research in this book that concludes with the banning of the ANC and the results of that act. Eight pages of black-and-white photos enhance the text. --Mike Printz, Topeka West High School, KS
