Synopsis

The many faces of the Civil War in the South can be seen in this book through the eyes of the soldiers who did the fighting and dying at the front, the wives and slaves who kept the home fires burning, and the children and grandchildren for whom their elders' stories of the war were their most vivid recollections. Much of the book is based on first-hand accounts from letters and diaries; some is reminiscence. Its mood varies as the human spirit varies.
