The American Friends Service Committee has been constructively engaged in analyzing and mediating Middle Eastern conditions for decades. This edition is another positive contribution, incorporating with clarity and balance the broad background with information on the vital events since the first edition in 1981. These include the further disintegration of Lebanon; the increasing harshness of the Israeli occupation of the West Bank and Gaza; the transformation of the political rhetoric of the PLO; and, most strikingly, the Palestinian intifadah , or uprising. Although the authors are harshly critical of the rigid commitment to continued occupation by the right-wing Israeli government, they maintain hope that a settlement can be negotiated, allowing both Israelis and Palestinians to have territorial sovereignty and secure borders. This survey remains an important resource for libraries and all Americans concerned about the Middle East.
