Discusses the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act and describes the current life style of Alaskan Eskimos
"synopsis" may belong to another edition of this title.
In 1983, the author was appointed by the Inuit Circumpolar Conference to conduct the Alaska Native Review Commission. He traveled to Eskimo, Indian, and Aleut villages to hold hear ings to determine the effects of the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act of 1971 (ANCSA). ANCSA was en acted to settle land claims in Alaska by imposing development plans based on corporate structures. Because of the social and economic realities of Native village life, the ``corporate structure'' was a poor choice and has been rela tively unworkable. The author's find ings show that ANCSA has endangered Native traditional and cultural values, as well as Native economies. He sug gests retribalization of Alaskan lands, tribal self-government, and Native ju risdiction over fish and wildlife. Rec ommended for large public and aca demic libraries.
