The Introduction offers a survey of the development of Sufi modes of knowing through the thirteenth century in their broader context, and then focuses on the manuals or compendia of Sufi spirituality treated here. About the Author

John Renard, who has a PhD in Islamic studies from Harvard University, is professor of theological studies at St. Louis University. He is the author of eleven other books, including four in Paulist Press's 101 Questions and Answers series, and Understanding the Islamic Experience. He is also editor of Ibn 'Abbad of Ronda in the Classics of Western Spirituality series.
