Father Keegan has been teaching in seminaries and colleges since 1969. He has been at Providence College since 1975. He is an active biblical scholar working for many years on task forces with the Catholic Biblical Association of America.. . . . . . . . . . . . FROM THE BACK COVER: Interpreting the Bible provides a simple, easy to read explanation of three current developments in critical biblical studies: Structuralism, reader-response criticism, and canonical criticism. Explanations of these highly complex methodologies are facilitated by the authorā€s use of charts, diagrams, and numerous biblical passages. Structuralism, reader-response criticism, and canonical criticism share a common emphasis on the role of the reader in the interpretive process. The author traces the importance of this perspective throughout the history of biblical interpretation and concludes with a chapter on the potential impact of these new methods on the relationship between Scripture and the Church. This book provides an excellent tool for anyone interested in modern critical study of the Bible.

Keegan develops the thesis that traditional diachronic techniques of biblical criticism (such as source, form, and redaction criticism) provide an incomplete analysis, and should be supplemented with developing synchronic methodologies, especially structuralist, reader-response, and canonical criticism. He presents the latter two approaches in a manner which intelligent novices can grasp, but he cannot simplify structuralism in a similar manner. This work could supplement the diachronic methodologies discussion, also from a Catholic perspective, in Raymond F. Collins's Introduction to the New Testament ( LJ 5/1/83). Despite the ``popular'' in the subtitle, for subject and seminary collections. Richard S. Watts, San Bernardino Cty. Lib., Cal.
