Traces historical concept of sin and changing models of sin and then discusses a new model of sin as addiction and parallels its evils and cures with alcoholism.

Despite the similarity in title, this complements rather than duplicates Gerald May's Addiction and Grace ( LJ 1/89). McCormick's goal is theological: to critique legalistic or strictly private models of sin as "a crime" or as "personal" and to suggest alternative ways of understanding it as a "a spiral," "a disease," or--at the end of the book--"an addiction." These models, he suggests, can help us to understand the social dimensions of sin and to incorporate relevant insights of psychiatrists like Karl Menninger or Scott Peck and self-help groups like AA. Stimulating, and easily accessible to interested lay readers as well as professionals.
