Understanding the Islamic Experience, John Renard. An integrated, thematic approach to the broader religious implications of Muhammad's life as epitomized in his three paradigmatic, journeys.

In this introductory text for the American non-Muslim, Renard (theological studies, St. Louis Univ.) emphasizes Islamic paradigms and metaphors that Christians and Jews will find familiar from their own traditions. Taking a sympathetic approach to Islam, he attempts to refute the barrage of distorted images, condescending attitudes, and unfounded fears commonly held in the West by pointing out the irrationality of media stereotypes and stressing the common religious experiences of the faithful. The text meanders through various theological topics and current issues, drawing upon important Qur'anic passages and the ideas of major Islamic scholars. Recommended for its positive approach and informative discussions of a much maligned ideological system.
