Todd receives a tour of the airport and discovers how its many operations work

Todd and his mother go to the Flyaway International Airport to meet his grandmother's plane from London. It is Todd's first trip to an airport, and as he learns about it, so do readers. The plane is late, giving Todd time for a complete tour, courtesy of an old friend of his mother's who is conveniently available at the information counter. Davies conveys an enormous amount of information here. In fact, he perhaps has written too much. While Todd provides a focus with whom readers can identify, the story covers so much territory that there is too much (and too small) type for the picture-book format and intended audience. The layout is attractive, and Geary also delivers a great deal of clear, accurate information. His cheery, full-color, black-outlined figures are simplified, but show realistic detail. The people are of all genders and color, and there is a person in a wheelchair. The other available picture books on airports and flying tend to emphasize the flight rather than airport operations. --Sylvia S. Marantz, Wellington School, Columbus, OH
