A bare-bones unauthorized biography of the intensely private superstar. The shy, introverted son of a Brooklyn shopkeeper, Diamond had a consuming ambition to succeed as a songwriter. After years struggling to pitch songs to others, he decided to sing his own. "Cherry Cherry" and other bubblegum rock hits appealed to teens, but his real talent lay in penning romantic pop. Between 1966 and 1972 no one in the world sold more records. Since then his career has stalled. Diamond's live performances draw raves, yet critics find his new songs overwrought and pretentious, and his film debut in the Jazz Singer was a major disappointment. The present book is not very revealing, but it is worth acquiring as the only Diamond biography likely to be available for some time. Thomas Jewell, Waltham P.L., Mass.
