Book by Joel Hirschhorn, Al Kasha

The excitement, the pain, and the joy of writing music for Broadway are brought vividly to life in this book. Two award-winning songwriters have inter viewed more than two dozen top com posers, including Leonard Bernstein, Stephen Schwartz, Jerry Herman, Jule Styne, and Alan Jay Lerner. The intelli gent interviews mix biography, theater anecdotes about major musical hits, and analyses of writing methods, train ing, and influences on style. The rela tionship of music to dramatic structure is discussed, as are the present state of songwriting and the future of musical theatre. Nothing like this has been pub lished recently, yet one glaring omis sion mars the book: there is no inter view with the brilliant Stephen Sondheim, though he is continually mentioned in other interviews. Other wise, an excellent addition to the litera ture. Daniel J. Lombardo, Jones Lib., Amherst, Mass.
