Reviews

Now that 20 years have elapsed, the Sixties as an era has taken on mythic proportions, and books evoking the sights and sounds of that time abound. These two titles are almost identical in their aim: to chronicle the era using its significant music and musicians, TV programs, movies, books, and fads. Both are successful in this, though Edelstein has presented a much more personal, biased, and selective book, interspersed with trivia quizzes, inter views, and lots of humor. Though both books are meant to be browsed and sa vored, rather than read from cover to cover, Edelstein's book has a more readable text. Makower's work is a chronological arrangement of newspaper-like blurbs on significant people and events of the times, divided by genre and including the political history of the day, which is not as evident in the Edelstein treat ment. Though Makower is more com prehensive, Edelstein is more fun. Since these are fairly inexpensive, you might want both. Rosellen Brewer, MOBAC Lib. System, Monterey, Cal.
