Description: This is a volume from the Time-Life Classics of the Old West and is a facsimile reprinting of the work originally published in 1902 by G P Putnam's Sons. Includes several black and white illustrations. The subtitle reads: ''The Story of its Discovery in 1540, with an Account of the Later Explorations, and with Special Reference to the Voyages of Powell through the Line of the Great Canyons.'' When Frederick Dellenbaugh was seventeen he joined Powell's Grand Canyon expedition. In addition to the first hand account provided by Dellenbaugh of Powell's expedition, he also provides a history of earlier explorations. Francis P Farquhar calls this ''an excellent compendium of Colorado River history from the time of Ulloa and Cardenas to the Brown-Stanton expedition of 1889-90. The first book to bring the main features of the story into good perspective. .sure to remain as one of the foundations of a Colorado River library''. Listed in Books of the Colorado River & the Grand Canyon Number 112. Includes the publisher's insert.
