This is a classic account by one of the officers who took part in one of the great escapades of WWII. In 1943 W. Stanley Moss and Patrick Leigh-Fermor, both serving with Special Forces in the Middle East, decided on a plan to kidnap General Kreipe, Commander of the Sevastopol Division in Crete, and bring him back to Allied occupied Cairo. This is the story of their adventures, working with a fearsome band of partisans, as they daringly capture the General in an ambush and struggle to evade pursuing German troops in the mountainous Cretan landscape to reach their rendezvous for evacuation to safety.

The late W. (Billy) Stanley Moss led an adventurous life as a young man before the War, fought with the 8th Army in the desert and then joined the Special Forces serving in Crete with the partisans.
With this title Burford launches its new "Classics of War" line. Moss here tells the remarkable story of how he and a fellow British commando infiltrated a Nazi stronghold in Crete, kidnapped a German general, and spirited him back to Egypt. Though based on fact, this could rival any best-selling espionage novel.

Hardbound. Condition: Good. Reprint Edition. Description: Originally published in 1950, this reprint edition is part of the Time-Life World War II Classics series, The Secret War. Photo frontis plus twenty one additional black and white photo illustrations and two maps. In the spring of 1944, with D-Day looming, British intelligence in Cairo stepped up its activities around the Mediterranean basin, parachuting agents into German occupied areas and generally proving to Hitler that his vaunted Fortress Europe was vulnerable south as well as north. This book recounts what was arguably the most improbable and absurdly dangerous of all these British ventures, the kidnapping of the German general commanding the occupation forces on Crete. It is an extraordinary tale, not least for the manner of the telling. Moss kept a diary that forms the bulk of this book, coolly penning entries even while he and his fellow kidnappers were scrambling about the island, dodging German patrols, so the narrative has the vividness of things seen and felt minute by minute. This copy includes the publisher's insert.
