The latest addition to Gale's ethnic publications begins in 1619 with the arrival of the first Africans to be brought forcibly to America and concludes in the summer of 1990. An introductory section presents some African history and a discussion of the effect each U.S. president has had on African American society. The main-section entries are brief yet informative. There are a few factual errors (the founding of the NAACP is noted as 1910 in one place, 1909 in another) and a few omissions (the Emmett Till murder is noted in 1989 in the entry for the unveiling of the Civil Rights memorial, not in 1955 when his case was more significant to the history of black America). It would also have been helpful if the biographical information had been arranged under the birth or death date of an individual. For example, the entry for Benjamin Banneker gives the impression that he died in 1791. There are also appendixes of significant documents and a detailed bibliography. The index, while complete, would have been more useful if major entries had been highlighted in some way. Despite these problems, this is a useful ready-reference source and will supplement such works as the Negro Almanac or the Encyclopedia of Black America. For academic and public libraries.
