This newest member of the "Gale Enviromental Library" series is a useful guide for the general public in obtaining information about dangerous chemicals, many of which are found in the home or workplace. Each of over 1000 substances is profiled, giving its potential uses and dangers, as well as synonyms, characteristics, Chemical Abstract Service (CAS) number, health and environmental effects, first aid procedures, and storage. There is also information on state and federal, national and international organizations, and data on books, periodicals, and online databases. A glossary is included, and two indexes are arranged by subject and by CAS number. This reference cannot be substituted for N. Irving Sax and Richard J. Lewis's Dangerous Properties of Industrial Chemicals , 7th ed. (Van Nostrand Reinhold, 1988) or Robert Lanza's Sigma-Aldrich Library of Chemical Safety Data , 2d ed. (Sigma-Aldrich, 1989), both of which are highly technical. However, except in a research or industrial setting, this helpful and easy-to-use book would fill most needs. For public and academic libraries.
