Science and technology librarians at the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh have mined the extensive ready reference file they have maintained for over 40 years for "gems" of useful and interesting information. The result is a compulsively browsable collection of over 1200 questions and answers on science, technology, and pseudo-science written in nontechnical language. Broad sections (e.g., "Physics and Chemistry") are divided into subcategories (e.g., "Matter"). The entries themselves are arranged in no particular order within subcategories, but the detailed index makes locating specific pieces of information simple. Well-chosen illustrations and tables supplement the succinct, readable answers. This paperback closely resembles the hardcover Science and Technology Desk Reference (LJ 3/15/ 93) produced by the same group, a work that better lends itself to use as a reference tool in academic or public libraries because it includes bibliographic source information with each answer and because it contains more material. The Answer Book might be more useful as a circulating item. Both are recommended, but librarians who must make a choice between the two should opt for the Science and Technology Desk Reference.
