These new career dictionaries for job seekers interested in the education or public administration fields are part of a series of five books similar in format to Advertising Career Dictionary and Magazine Career Directory (both LJ 11/15/90). (The other three cover film and video, performing arts, and the physical sciences.) The first chapters consist of articles by professionals who discuss the nature of the business, typical career expectations, career paths, and necessary job qualifications in a multitude of unique and related specialties. In education, the occupations covered include careers from environmental education and college-level psychology to counseling and librarianship. In public administration, specialties vary from government public relations and rural planning to public housing and child welfare work. Other chapters, identical in both directories, deal with practical matters regarding job-search strategy: targeting employers, networking, resume and cover letter preparation, and the interview process. Sample worksheets, resumes, and letters are targeted to the subject of the directory. In addition, each guide provides a job-opportunities databank-an A-to-Z listing of entry-level employers and internships. In the reference on education, more than 210 public school, university, and college jobs are included along with teaching assistantships and student teaching opportunities. In the reference on public administration, more than 175 federal government agencies, departments, and organizations offering entry-level jobs and internships are furnished. A final chapter in both guides identifies sources of help-wanted ads, professional associations, employment agencies, search firms, and career publications.
